My #$%^&* Birthday Cake

Well, today is my birthday. Tomorrow my family will celebrate my special day with a lunch at Mom and Dad's. I, of course, volunteered to make my own cake since I AM the proud owner of a new KitchenAid mixer. It is now 8:42 pm and the cake is out of the oven. LOOK! My little friend Betsy helped me create this disaster. Never in all my attempts at baking have I/we fallen so short of the goal. JM's Dad's cake at least just fell off the plate. Mine fell off the plate and oozed magma all over the counter. I wish you could have seen it when I first flipped the pan over on the cake plate. For approximately 17.38 seconds it was a beautiful cake. Betsy says I need a cake tester. I think I need a man in my life who can bake - to hell with the tester. Does anyone want a slightly used KitchenAid mixer? By the way, I WAS somewhat distracted by the eggs that were coming to room temp (see below - note my birthday portrait in the tea kettle). Perhaps I should stick to photography! And, finally, Note To Self: One should never make one's own birthday cake...

Oh, my!!! I have had one to fall apart but not ooze! That's hilarious, of course I didn't have to clean it up! I took the one that fell apart to school. It was the best tasting thing I ever made! Did you try some of it? By the way - those eggs... hummmm... where have I seen that before?

Sally gave me this recipe. I thought she loved me...

...and, yes, the solid parts are delicious...

Perhaps, you should have used more Elmer's glue. I did notice it near the oven! I hear it stops the cracking and oozing!

Sharp eye there, Miss Betsy! A girl just can't have too much Elmers when she cooks like I do!

As I suspected: you are a rank sentimentalist.

Absolutely - please don't tell anyone - I DO have an image to maintain...

Oh no! That's terrible! Maybe it was just the pressure of making your own cake.

Sometimes the worst looking cakes taste the best!

ROFL! I love it! I've had that same thing happen. Except maybe not QUITE that bad.

Now is when you get in the car and drive to a bakery...

Oh my gosh!!! I am cracking up more than your, your...creation! Let me guess, you walked on the floor a little too hard, you opened the oven door to peek in, you didn't use butter, margarine, or crisco, you truly didn't use a toothpick, you did have the oven on right? Please continue to use your slightly used yet fabulous KitchenAid Mixer as things will get better. I might have to come over and give you hands-on lessons with a few of my recipes and I'll PHOTOGRAPH YOU in action. Looking forward to seeing you in a future class....hey, that's an idea - offer a cooking/photography/food type class and mix in a little laptop usage with the software and a new idea is born right in someone's kitchen. We will then meet at the local Barnes and Noble to make flipcharts, excel sheets, etc. on the laptops while enjoying a cup of joe and a mug of giggles. That would be a blast!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY just a tad late but with all the sentiments just the same.

This cake was a testament to Murphy's Law of Baking. I'm guessing I did everything wrong...Thank you for the great course idea! Love it!
