Moving On to Important Things

I must say that retiring is fun. Had I known just how MUCH fun, I would have done it years ago. My family and friends have been so sweet. I can truthfully say that I am happy to be over it. Now on to full time family, friends, fun, travel, photography, and enjoying my own backyard! Just think, my birds and squirrels will get fresh water every single morning!

This is my choice for first read as an unemployed person. I LOVE Dorothea Benton Frank and Bulls Island is terrific!!!

Lord, Give Me Grace

Having never retired before, I'm new at this. I've been doing the happy dance now for over a year and I've no doubt driven the poor souls around me quite mad. I've counted months, days, hours, and even a minute here and there and now the time has come.

For some reason, today was different. I was throwing away 32 years worth of notes, letters, cards, pictures, computer files - weeding out all but the very priceless - as my house cannot handle 32 years worth of sentimental work stuff. Maybe I was seeing too much going into the trash. Maybe I was having too many memories flooding in at one time. Maybe the old hormones were in assault mode. Whatever the cause, I was not pleasant.

Is there a retirement version of Bridezilla - perhaps a Retirezilla?

Pray for me tomorrow. I want my last day to be a happy one. I want to leave with a smile on my face - not in hand cuffs for killing the person who stepped on my last nerve. Grace - that's it! I need grace! Pray hard - on a good day, grace is a tough one for me!

Mr. Lucious Johnson

I had dinner tonight with a dear friend to celebrate my retirement. We shared many old stories, but one I told that I hadn't thought about for years was the story of Mr. Lucious Johnson. When I hired Lucious he was 64 and I was 35. He was a quiet, gentle black man whom I had hired to be my floor technician at a brand new elementary school. He worked mostly those odd hours when the children weren't there so that he could run the big noisy equipment that kept the floors beautiful, shiny, and new. He did wonderful work and was very proud of his floors. We had many teddy bears around the school and he would tell the children that they ran around the school halls at night, sliding on their fuzzy bottoms, polishing the floors. They would laugh and wonder at his tales. They too loved Lucious. But what I remember most about Lucious were those quiet times when he and I were alone in the building and I would hear his big, deep, beautiful voice singing his church hymns. Sometimes I would quietly sing along and he never knew that. Mostly, however, I would just listen and learn from his heart-felt singing. Sometimes I would come out to check on him and find him on his knees with his small pocket knife scraping up a spot that just wasn't supposed to be there, singing all the while.

Mr. Lucious Johnson is singing in the heavenly choir now. I just hope that he knew that I loved and respected him. We shared so much - similar work ethics and love for the children - and he cared every bit as much about his job as I did about mine. I was so lucky to have known him!

Just 49 Hours

This is pretty exciting! People hate to see me coming...counting down hours must be pretty annoying! And, while I know that, I keep doing it...

Shocking!

The children finished the school year today. That was easier than I thought it would be. I guess that's because I know I can come visit any time I want and fill up on hugs. I'm going to miss the wee ones!

One Month From Today

OK - I need to tie my feet to the floor.....ONE MONTH FROM TODAY is it! This cartoon sort of goes along with it...I retire and gas costs more than I make - crazy! I guess I will get lots of gardening, bird-watching, reading, and photography done! Also, I'm mostly looking forward to lots of time with family and friends. Tea, anyone?

Giant News

I just added all pertinent data to next year's work calendar. Most pertinent of all is my retirement date - May 30, 2008!!!!!! That's JM's birthday every year but my day next year! Most of me is very excited but some of me is a little reserved about the idea of not getting up for work. I've worked all my life and really can't image how it will feel to NOT WORK and GET a PAY CHECK anyway! Sound like a great plan to me!
